For me, sobriety meant a much improved relationship with work. For a long time, I was performing jobs that I was capable of doing, but I didn’t really love.

When I was drinking, greasy hangover food was a staple. I would overeat and then under-eat. I looked bloated in my “before” pictures. Cutting out alcohol improved my physical fitness, and my diet. In early sobriety I allowed myself a lot of treats for my sugar cravings, but that passed. I find myself eating healthier simply because I’m paying more attention to my body now.

How­ev­er, as your liv­er begins to metab­o­lize the alco­hol in your blood stream, your heart rate and blood pres­sure rise, which pre­vents you from achiev­ing a deep sleep. With­out this dis­rup­tion to your cen­tral ner­vous sys­tem, your blood pres­sure and heart rate can remain sta­ble as you rest. Most alco­holic bev­er­ages are high in calo­ries and many are also mixed with juice or oth­er liq­uids that are loaded with sug­ar.

So that kind of inspirations, spirituality, whatever you want to call it, obviously, meditation if you if you but a lot of people find they can’t meditate at the beginning, I certainly couldn’t when I was drinking. So that’s a build up for a lot of people. And then of course, the really, really important one is connection. And I just don’t think this is possible without connection with like-minded people. We really need people who have been there, done it got the t shirt.

The best surprise in sobriety has been finding a new group of like-minded people. Sobriety is a great connector, and making friends in sobriety has been one of the best surprises of ditching the drink. My social calendar is alcohol and insomnia full of fun alcohol-free activities and events. I have friends that still drink alcohol and I have new friends that don’t. Getting sober was a lonely journey at first, but finding community has made all the difference.

And she just had this massive wobble and was able to kind of post in our community and she just got such love Chuck tattered. And when you can kind of get your head around that the importance of it, then you can give it the attention it deserves. And it really does deserve all of your attention.

I have gotten a lot more into running. I started an advanced business with my best friend, I have so much time and I do so many more things. That’s the tip of the iceberg, but the transformation I’ve seen in my life since I’ve stopped has been crazy. Even though she’s just 27 years old, drinking often made Syd feel terrible the next day.

FOR YOUR FIRST MONTH ALCOHOL-FREE

This is probably the biggest benefit to sobriety. I’m now on my own team and I believe in myself. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it causes our kidneys to get rid of salt and water through urination. When you quit drinking, you’ll probably notice that the colds, flu, and other illnesses you always seem to catch happen less often. When you do get sick, you’ll probably feel like you recover more easily when you’re sober. Even if you know that there are benefits to quitting alcohol, it does not mean that it’s easy to stop drinking—especially if you’ve been misusing alcohol for a long time. I tell my clients to think of cravings and slips as important data—what can you learn from them? What factors (people/places/feelings/activities) were related to your drinking or wanting to drink?
